Mauer introduced a resolution naming the town in memory of his late father-in-law who had served as mayor from 1945 until his death in 1984; Jens Hansen Mauer had also been instrumental in helping create the village board's authority over local government affairs when he served as its first chairman from 1984 until 1995.Mauer Resolution No. 5 In November 2007, Glen Carbon became one of only two townships (the other being Mount Prospect) in Cook County that are both unincorporated communities - their residents are considered " Residents OF Glen Carbon". In February 2009 Township trustees approved an ordinance that allowsResidents OF Glen Carbon to vote on ordinances related to government operations such as zoning changes and planning controls. According to Township officials, this new arrangement gives Residents more control over their community while still allowing them access to services provided by Township Manager Rick Kriegel."Tribune story," Feb 92009 On October 12th 1969 Mayor Richard J. Glen Carbon is an unincorporated community in Putnam County, Illinois, west of the village of Carbondale. The community was named for Captain George A. The present post office building was built in 1938 and is used by the Putnam County Board of Commissioners. Glen Carbon has a small amount of industry; however, it is not very significant. The Glen Carbon area was first settled by the aborigines in the late 1800s. The area was later named after Dr. John Glencarbon, a doctor who lived in nearby Peoria. In 1899, a small community called Glen Carbon Post Office was established and remains in operation today. By 1912, the population of the town had reached 100 people and it remained an agricultural center until World War II when the manufacture of airplanes led to a large increase in population and businesses downtown. After the war, Glen Carbon became known as a bedroom community for Chicagoans while remaining an agricultural center with crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat, apples and oranges being grown. The post office closed in 1965 but is still standing today as part of the Glen Carbon Historical Society Museum which also contains artifacts from early settlers to present day residents.
