The Mormons left in 1869, but their farm continued to be used until it was sold to the government in 1922. In 1897, a post office was established at Glen Carbon and remained in operation until 1954. The community name was changed from "Galloway" to "Glen Carbon" after James A. Garfield died.

In 1827, the Illinois General Assembly created the County of Sangamon, and Glen Carbon became part of it. By 1840, Glen Carbon had a population of 1,500 people. By 1860, the village had grown to 2,000 people and by 1880 it had reached 5,000 people. In 1890, the area around Glen Carbon was annexed into Cook County and Glencarbon became a part of that county. In 1912, Cook County merged with Indiana Territory to form Illinois Territory and in 1916 Glencarbon became a part of Carbondale County.
