Glen Carbon is a small town in northwest Illinois, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kane County Metropolitan Statistical Area. Glen Carbon first came to prominence as the location for the Glen Carbon Arsenal, which produced arms and ammunition for American forces during World War II. The arsenal closed in 1974, but has since been reborn as a museum dedicated to history and culture in the town. The museum also features an on-site restaurant that serves American cuisine. The town was originally settled by Scots immigrants who arrived around 1812. By 1836, most of the original settlers had died from disease or violence at the hands of Indians, so a group of farmers led by Alexander Shields moved in and founded a new settlement called Shieldsville on what is now State Road 2 west of Glen Carbon. In 1857, John Laughlin organized a group ofsmiths and brewers to form the nucleus of what would become Glen Carbon Brewing Company Ltd., which became one of America's leading brewing companies. By 1870, there were over 100 residents in Shieldsville and 3 businesses catering to them: grocery store, saddlery shop and blacksmith shop (later renamed furnace). In 1872 two brothers named George Stephenson bought land east of Shieldsville from Alexander Shields for $2 per acre (or $40 per lot). They began building a sawmill on their site that became one of America's largest sawmills until it closed down in 1916 due to World War I debt problems. Stephenson's Sawmilling Company continued operations until 1955; however, it never regained its former stature as an industry leader after significant competition from larger mills throughout much of America during this period.

Glen Carbon is a small town in northeastern Illinois that was founded in 1839. The community lies on the banks of the Illini River and is located about 25 miles northeast of Chicago. Glen Carbon was named for Captain John Glen, who had purchased the land from the Winnebago Indians in 1824. The village first grew to include about 200 people when a Methodist church was built in 1841. In 1865, however, the population increased to about 400 when a sawmill and gristmill were erected at nearby Clearfield. The community continued to grow until 1970 when it became an unincorporated community. Glen Carbon’s history can be traced back to multiple sources, including Dutch traders who arrived in 1765 and built a trading post on the banks of the Illini River; immigrants from Hungary who settled at Clearfield between 1827 and 1830; and Chicagoans who came to carve out a place in what would become Northwest Illinois during the late 1800s. The village enjoyed some success during its early years, but eventually went into decline as manufacturing switched from agriculture to industry. By 1970, however, Glen Carbon had regained some of its former prosperity thanks to various businesses such as furniture manufacturing and local agricultural production. Today, it remains an important community with strong ties to its origins and culture – both within itself and across Greater Chicago.

In 1876, Glen Carbon became a city and the first mayor was George Patton. The town experienced economic growth from the early 1800s until World War I when it began to decline. From 1918 to 1924, Glen Carbon experienced an agricultural depression due to overproduction of foodstuffs in Illinois during the war years. After World War II, Glen Carbon regained its prosperity as heavy industry moved into the area. However, during the late 1990s and 2000s, some residents began to experience blighting problems with weeds and other pests that have caused major water shortages in their neighborhoods.
