Glen Carbon is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. Glen Carbon is located on the banks of the Des Plaines River. Glen Carbon began as a log cabin community in 1841. It was named for General John A. Glen, who served as Ulysses S. Grant's aide-de-camp during the American Civil War and then became an Iowa congressman. In 1892, Glenn Carbon incorporated as a village under the name of Arlington Heights. The town's first school was built in 1879 and its first store opened in 1880. The first post office was established in 1886 and the current one opened in 1902. In 1905, Glenn Carbon annexed what is now Edwardsville to its municipal boundaries; this annexation made it one of McHenry County's five townships (the others being Arlington Heights, Carbondale, North Chicago, and Wilmette). In 1912–13, Glenn Carbon successfully challenged Chicago's prohibition ordinance by using force to remove a ban on liquor sales from two local stores; this victory helped launch alcohol prohibition nationwide that year. The town continued to prohibit liquor sales until 1933 when it became part of Cook County (312 years after Glencarbon incorporation). Since then, Glaswegian Protestants have dominated much of the social life of their small town while Catholics have managed to maintain some degree of support; both groups participate actively in local government affairs and contribute substantially to economic development within the community. Glencarbon has been home to several Scottish immigrants over recent decades; many continue to live here fulltime while working elsewhere locally or traveling frequently within Illinois and other states They are also known for their annual Highland Games which take place each fall near downtown GLEN CARSON
