Coal production ceased completely within 25 miles of Glencarbon after 1970 when new natural gas supplies became available making coal mining uneconomical The current community center was built in 1951 and is one of only a few original buildings remaining from that time period. It has been enlarged multiple times since then including adding an annexe which served as administrative offices for the school district until 1975 when that office was moved to Elk Grove Village From 1959-1982, Glencarbon was home to Illinois State Normal University (ISNU). Now known as DePaul University (DU), Glencarbon remains an important educational destination with over 16K students enrolled annually across 9 colleges/universities

In 1856, Glen Carbon erected a steam engine to haul coal from mines nearby to town for use by the local paper mills; this engines are still extant today and are used by several institutions including Holy Name Catholic High School and All Souls Unitarian Church. By 1880, the number of businesses had grown to twelve with four banks and six grocery stores operating on Main Street alone; two years later, two hotels were built: one on Harrison Street east of Main (now demolished) and another west of Main (now occupied by Our Lady Help Of Christians Parish). In 1916, localist leader Al Smith helped to rename the town Glen Carbon after his home state, New York; this change reflected Smith's desire that all residents be able to share one name rather than receive personalized attention from individual business owners or politicians. In 1952-1953, when Interstate 80 was being constructed through Cook County parallel to Main Street between Addison Road north and south due east of downtown Chicago), much heavy equipment was brought into Glen Carbon for use during construction; many items such as bulldozers and large graders remain parked outside town limits today as evidence of how important transportation infrastructure was at that time.
