Geneva is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,490 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Geneva is located on the east bank of the river La Salle and has a rich history dating back to 1836 when it was named for General Lafayette. The city's current boundaries were established in 1907 when they were created as part of an agreement between Kane County and Cook County. The first settler in Geneva was John Larkin who arrived from Ireland in 1836. He founded a gristmill on the east side of the river La Salle and constructed a log cabin near present-day Canal Street. Larkin’s mill became one of the early mills in Kane County, which had only five other businesses by 1850. A post office called Geneva was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. The city's first school opened its doors on April 1, 1856, with nine students attending grades one through six under teacher Mrs.(Ann) Sprague. In 1861 local resident James Hickey organized a school board and built a new school building on State Street that still stands today as “Hickey Hall” (named for him). During this time Geneva also saw growth within its limits due to increased trade with nearby Carbondale and Des Plaines; however there were no roads or sidewalks until after World War II when construction began on I-95W which now runs through much of downtown Geneva including much of Hickey Hall's old land! In 1907 Geneva incorporated as a village under the name "New Helvetia". New Helvetia quickly grew into one of Illinois' most important villages; it boasted many successful businesses such as grocery stores, services businesses (including doctoring), banks (two branches), insurance companies (four branches),auto body shops/repair shops, lumberyards/smelters etc... New Helvetia enjoyed high levels of government funding throughout its early years; all public schools were provided free by state law beginning in 1909 (!); Furthermore community members managed their own social welfare programs such as food stamps (or "food relief"), health clinics & kindergartens - often providing vital support during hard times for citizens struggling financially...During World War II almost every family owned their home & groceries - thanks to rationing; however most residents chose not to fight because they could have afforded to do so had they chosen!
