Geneva is a city in the Illinois River Valley in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,824 at the 2010 census. Geneva was founded on February 17, 1802 by Swiss immigrants as a small trading post called "Johannesburg." The first post office was established in Geneva on July 2, 1802. The town grew rapidly and by 1825 it had twenty-four stores and two hotels. In 1828, Geneva became the capital of Illinois Territory after the state's admission to the Union. In 1836, when Peoria opened its new courthouse in that year and Geneva could not build one because of financial limitations, citizens voted to name their new town "Geneva" in honor of their old trading post. A new courthouse was built in 1840 and the town continued to grow until it reached its peak development around 1860 with over 100 businesses. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Geneva saw heavy fighting and damage from Confederate forces which destroyed much of its infrastructure including most of its homes and businesses. After Reconstruction (1868-1912), many refugees from across America poured into Geneva seeking safety from violence and poverty throughout southern Illinois. By 1920 there were only six businesses remaining in the once thriving community; however, due to growth rates within Kane County during this time period (particularly during World War II), additional businesses have started up since then within Geneva itself as well as elsewhere in Kane County thanks to innovative marketing methods pioneered by local entrepreneurs such as Chuck Whitehead who has been credited with starting or driving Kane County's current successful economic revival firm since he bought his first business - an ice cream parlor - in 1984!
