Geneva is a city located in central Illinois, United States. It was founded in 1833 by General James K. Polk and his brother-in-law, George M. Cushing, as the village of Galesburg. The city grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s due to its location near the mouths of two large rivers, the Chicago River and the Fox River. In 1857, Geneva became an incorporated town with a population of 940 people. By 1870, it had reached 1,500 people and became a city on May 5th that year with a population of 3,000 people. The city was renamed after Switzerland's capital by Mayor John Bedingfield in 1893. In 1907, Geneva merged with neighbouring towns of Bedford (to the south) and Holland (to the north). During World War I (1914-18), Geneva served as a military post for troops stationed in Cook County along Lake Shore Drive. After the war ended in 1918, Geneva experienced rapid growth thanks to its status as an agricultural center and its position as an important transportation hub on the Chicago Great Lakes region. The population peaked at over 10,000 people in 1940 before declining to around 7600 by 1970 while remaining below 6000 through 1990 when it increased slightly but again declined by 2000.
Geneva was founded in 1809 by JohnMissouri, a United States Army officer who became the first governor of Illinois. It is named after the Swiss city of Geneva.
