Geneva is an unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois. It is located on a small stream, the Geneva River. The population was 809 at the 2010 census. Geneva was platted in 1881 by James Witherspoon and named for the city of Geneva, Switzerland. In 1838, John Butterfield built a cabin here and started his Butterfield National Railroad from Carbondale to Moline. In 1857, he sold his interest in the railroad to George Stephenson and began building the London & Manchester Railway from Manchester to Lisle. The Stephenson-Butterfield Railway became part of the Chicago Central Railroad when it was formed in 1872. The post office at Geneva served until 1907. A store and two houses were built here in 1886 by J.P. Morgan and his brother-in-law William Teller; they were replaced by a frame church edifice (dedicated January 3, 1912) that remains standing today as one of downtown Geneva's most distinguishing features. It has been called "the most beautiful church in Kane County." The townspeople raised taxes to support public schools starting with Kindergarten through Twelveth Grade before voters approved a new school district against strong opposition from private interests in 1909 via referendum which reorganized all school districts within Kane County into four large districts under local boards of education with centralized budgets - this system still exists today (Kane County operates its own educational facilities). In 1916 Aurora Township merged into the new district while Georgetown Township merged into it due south (northwest) of town center; these mergers left only Schoeneweber Township adjacent to town center remaining within original district boundaries unchanged apart from name change during World War II when village became township because its land lay within borders established for that purpose by General Order No 4236 dated December 9, 1944 providing for separate military service townships adjacent thereto bordering on certain other villages within territory allotted thereby: Schoeneweber being thus reassigned its original name - now known as North Aurora Township - while Georgetown becomes South Aurora Township subject to changes as required by General Order No 4237 dated February 1st 1946 effective date thereof governing combined services thereunder including erection of war memorials or similarexprumentation pursuant to direction given therein; accordingly both names have continued unchanged since then pending repeal or approval of local ordinances which would result in their reversal or continuation under different names notwithstanding attached map showing location of current village boundaries approximately corresponding thereto exhibiting same general outlines as those depicted on said map although not exact equivalents having regard to intervening properties acquisitions since making such detailed survey no part of present study . So long ago Spokane Falls Community College opened its doors near what is now Wayne State University herein located but officially known as "Southgate" until 1962 when upon expiration of 25 year lease agreement between predecessor college & school board members representing then Village Of North Aurora resulting principally from efforts made jointly by two groups Local 523 Daughters Of The American Revolution & Society For Creative Education Citizens Committee et al.; then Southgate College closed abruptly followed byVillage taking over property formerly used by Southgate College thenceforth known formally as North Aurora Campus thereof throughout this entire period without ever satisfying either group that leased land thereto also prior authorization had been obtained nor did negotiations proceed beyond reference/reference materials available at time seizure/no longer extant withering away / fully functioning college open againalbeit renamed after predecessor once Municipality took over / graciously giving us access / originally designed more like high school than college type facility witherspoonCollege has always been open 7 days a week except PTO day off
