In 1855, Major Benjamin Butler developed the first self-propelled gun in America using this new bullet known as “Butler” Bullet. The projectile itself weighed only 1/2 pound and could be fired at high speeds with great accuracy thanks to its exceptionally hard outer shell. Geneva is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,362 at the 2010 census. Geneva was founded in 1853 by residents of Palmyra and its surrounding towns as the site of a new military post on the Sauk Trail. It became an agricultural center due to its location near the eastern edge of Illinois and the abundance of water available from the great Kanab River. The town's first store was built in 1854 by John C. Stephenson. In 1865, Geneva became home to one of two national arsenals during World War II, which helped make it an important industrial center after the war. The city experienced growth following World War II until it lost its status as an agricultural center and declined economically in the 1990s and 2000s. The history of Geneva begins with Fort Snelling Treaty negotiations that took place between Great Britain and France in 1818-19 about where this area would be divided between them during their war for control over North America east of Mexico City. As part of this treaty, Napoleon Bonaparte agreed to cede possession of Michigan Territory (present day Indiana) to Great Britain while retaining most if not all southern Minnesota including Geneva area including what is now Ottawa County and parts now within Kane County France also agreed to build Fort Snelling on Hudson's Bay Company land east of present-day Chicago according to French maps dating back to 1763 when Pierre-Jean La Salle explored that area for France before his expedition across Canada). Afterward, large numbers of Native Americans were displaced as part of General James Kasky's Invasion/Extermination campaign along with many European settlers who moved into what is today Kane County during this time period from what are now Ontario Canada thru Wisconsin US Prior to 1830 there was no permanent settlement or trade within present day Kane County other than small scattered villages located around rivers such as Osage River (now northeast Iowa), Sangamon River (now southeast Missouri), Big Muddy River (now southwest Arkansas), White Earth Creek (now northwestMinnesota), Licking River (now northeast Ohio) & others similar locations European exploration began occurring throughout central Illinois region beginning with Captain George Rogers Clark's ill fated attempt upriver from Warsaw on October 13th 1795 known as Whitewater Expedition which ultimately failed due largely to natural obstacles including rapids & silt bars preventing him from reaching his proposed landing spot at Kasky Ford
