Geneva is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,846 at the 2010 census. Geneva was founded by William and Elizabeth (Becker) Dayton on October 16, 1837. It has been called the "City of Churches." Geneva is one of the oldest towns in McLean County and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two centuries. The first European to visit Geneva was Jacques Marquette in 1679. In 1762, John Cook charted a course that would take him south to what is now Chicago. George Washington stopped at Geneva on his way west during the Northwest India Expedition of 1795-1796. In 1837, William and Elizabeth (Becker) Dayton founded Geneva as a small settlement near what is now Springfield Township with just 10 residents. They named it after their hometown of Geneva, Switzerland which they had visited twice before on business trips to Europe. William Dayton also served as its first Mayor from 1840-1845 and again from 1850-1855. The city's first post office opened in 1839; it continued until it was discontinued in 1903 due to population growth within the town limits that required new buildings on both sides of Route 66 across the street from where mail used to be delivered daily between Springfield and Vienna (then Orleans). The first building erected in Geneva were log cabins which stood until 1870 when a brick house replaced them; this structure still stands today as part of downtownGeneva's 400th anniversary celebration program! In 1886, an electric light show began operations in downtownGeneva which continued until 1951 when it was replaced by daylight savings timeurnal operation! Other early businesses include J H Anderson & Son Livery stable operated from 1843-1860 and W C Popegrove blacksmith shop starting up in 1840 which closed around 1865 but reopened around 1880 under new ownership before finally being forced out of business sometime after World War I! After years of decline beginning around 1920s with increasing poverty among citizens along with competition from larger communities such as Peoria Illinois Municipal Airport toileting facilities were built adjacent to city limits soon followed by other shopping centers like Sears Roebuck etc., all while downtownGeneva slowly lost its importance overall despite attempts at revival throughout the 1990s through various marketing campaigns including an architecturally significant renovation project completed in 1998 funded largely through private donations!! However even after decades of neglect this once vibranttown has managed to maintain some level of cultural significance due mostly to its rich history - much research has gone into restoring many old buildings and artifacts located inside or close by while maintaining parklands adjoining town center/downtown including several large greenhouses dating back to circa 1800!!! Today there are over 50 restaurants join 3 movie theaters located centrally within walking distance making Geneva easily accessible for anyone looking for a great quality tourist spot without having any impact on local traffic or pollution ratings!!!
