Galesburg, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Galesburg is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Polk founded a small post office here for settlers who had gathered around his home on the Osage River. By 1870, Galesburg had become one of Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad's busiest stations with passengers coming from all over president Abraham Lincoln's America during that era. In 1860, when two Quaker missionaries came to this area and began preaching Christianity to Native American tribes in what are today Douglas and Grundy counties (the so-called "Masonic mission"), they named their new village after Galesburg Township in Lancaster County where they were living at that time: Nappaqua Village (later renamed Galesberg). They left behind a number of artifacts including pottery shards found near present day Griggs Road which suggest that early residents ate local produce as their main source of sustenance.
