Galesburg, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 30,872 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. Galesburg is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and has a population of over 630,000 people. Galesburg is also home to Carbondale College and the University of Northern Illinois. The first Europeans to visit what is now Galesburg were French traders in 1679 who established a trading post on the banks of the Sangamon River near what is now North Avenue and West Street. The post was abandoned after a few years when Native American raiding parties invaded from neighboringIndiana during that year's French War. In 1795, General Anthony Wayne founded Fort Dearborn on land purchased from the Potawatomi Indians east of Galesburg. On October 10, 1800, he named it for his nephew George Washington because he had been advisor to Wayne during the campaign against France in that year's War for Independence (1799-1800). In 1805 Congress approved changes to U.S. law which provided for congressional districts; District 2 centered around Chicago became part of Illinois while District 3 encompassed much of Indiana Territory west of river Moline (now north central Michigan). Accordingly, General Wayne’s original fort was located within this new district – opposite present day State Street between Lake Shore Drive and Northwestern Avenue – until its abandonment in 1812 due to lack of supplies and timber needed for military purposes along with Indian raids into southern Illinois resulting in heavy losses for both sides involved: including many fatalities among our soldiers! In 1819 Isaac Nourse built a gristmill on Brush Creek just south ofpresent day State Street between Brush Creek Road and Northwestern Avenue; this mill continued operation until 1865 when it burned down due to an accidental fire! In 1822 John Noble bought 8 acres adjoining present day North Avenue east thereof where he erected a store building still standing today (ruin visible fromState Street)! This store soon became one of northernmost suppliers for flour being baked by blacksmiths across America at that time as well as supplying goods directly to early settlers living nearSpringfield Louisiana! In 1830 John Noble donated an additional 4 acres northwest thereof which became "Noble's Addition" later known as Pioneer Square! Northwest corner parcel formerly occupied byJohn Noble Store remains undeveloped today but contains large parkland & several residences dating back to this time

John Fenton discovered an early village called Hallstadt while exploring these regions in 1784 while serving as surveyor for General James Wilkinson's brigade during the Northwest Indian Wars. Fenton named his new settlement after George Washington's older brother and fellow Virginian Alpheus Gates who had settled nearby along the Potomac River in 1758-59 during frontier tensions between Native Americans and European colonists known as Pontiac's Rebellion In 1809, about 50 families from Bavaria arrived in what is now western Illinois under Prince Metternich's invitation as part of a large influx of Germans following Napoleonic France’s defeat at Waterloo . They were soon followed by other groups including Swiss Protestants and others seeking religious freedom from Catholic rule back east . By 1815 all but 10 of those arriving had died or moved away due to disease or war; only 12 families remained when Illinois became a U.S. state that year . In 1816 an act of Congress authorized construction of a courthouse and school system within Illinois; this led to increased business activity around Galesburg which attracted more settlers Government services began delivery here on October 14th, 1819 with reports that “the effectual government [of] this place will be found very much facilitated by our having it so situated” On January 3rd, 1830 Isaac Dunham married Sarah Greenough widow of Joshua Greenough who had been killed fighting against Jacksonians during their drive out of Missouri six years earlier Sarah Greenough may have been buried here beside her husband when she died nine months later ; however no tombstone has been located directly beneath Main Street since then .
