Galesburg is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 18,817 at the 2010 census. Galesburg is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It lies on the border of Cook and Will counties. The city proper includes about 12 square miles (30 km2). The first European to visit Galesburg was Giovanni da Verona in 1524. From this initial sighting by Europeans there was very little activity in Galesburg until after the American Revolutionary War when it became an important stop on the Underground Railroad because many slaves were transported through here from southern Illinois to freedom in Canada or other parts of North America. In 1814, James K. Polk visited Galesburg during his presidential campaign and noted that “a handsome town” he had seen while campaigning near Springfield but he failed to mention "Galesburgh". In 1840 John Quincy Adams also visited here during his presidency; however Adams did not mention "Galesburgh" as one of his stops along with Springfield and Carbondale (now day-to-day Danville). After Abraham Lincoln's election as US President in 1860 Galesburg quickly grew into a busy commercial center due to its location on Illinois' northwestern border and its role as a staging ground for Confederate forces attacking Union troops entering Illinois from Missouri during the Civil War. After Lincoln's death most of the business stopped until after General George McClellan took over command of Union forces invading Maryland in 1865 which caused much excitement throughout central Illinois due toMcClellan's possible crossing into that state from northern Illinois just east of Galesberghe called Battle Creek where he would make his last stand before being surrendered at Appomattox Court House; although no such crossing ever happened McClellan remains regarded by many as having initiated what has come to be known as the Northwestern Indiana region strategic offensive against Northern Virginia - something some still refer to today as THE GREAT MCCLELLAN CASTLE BATTLE! One local author even penned a book about it called: "George Washington's ghost revisited: A history of Appomattox Court House"). A post office called Galesburg was established in 1836, but failed within two years because settlers refused to deliver mail to a Native American village located less than three miles away (the community now serves as headquarters for nearby Rockford Township). The first postmaster general for Cook County was Cyrus Haseltine who served from 1840-1842; however, mail delivery never resumed after this time due primarily to difficulties transporting goods upriver past rapids formed by the Sangamon River when it joined the Brandywine Creek near present day Mount Pleasant . In 1854 Anthony Wayne founded a wagon road between Warsaw, Ohio and Stonington, Connecticut which led via this same route through Gavesborough towards Watertown; however following Wayne's death only traces remain today of this early turnpike connection now known locally simply as 'The Wagon Road'. With few exceptions all major transportation routes within central IL changed hands multiple times during these years leading up finally culminating with Alfred Piatek establishing Interstate 80 through central IL linking Chicago & points north including Racine & Milwaukee - one day later becoming its first western terminus! One key event associated with early days of Ganesburg was when Daniel Boone crossed Iowa river adjacent to present day Burlington Heights sometime between 1775-1777 while exploring what would become Ohio Country searching for land grant possibilities following completion of Great Lakes Expedition under commander Marquette
