Galesburg was first settled by German immigrants in 1818 as a farming community on the west bank of the Kankakee River near its confluence with the Des Plaines River. In 1837, John Jacob Astor founded Astoria Village on what is now Jackson Avenue between State Street and Randolph Road in what is now downtown Galesburg. On October 15, 1839, General James Wilkinson named this new settlement after his brother-in-law Senator Henry Knox (1795–1865), who had been appointed Minister to Russia by President Andrew Johnson before he became Ulysses S. Grant’s Secretary of War. In 1840, when Knox became Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs under Salmon P. Chase (1806–1881), he organized a group of investors to purchase 160 acres (60 hectares) along present-day Main Street from De Witt Clinton for $2 per acre ($6 per hectare). The settlers built their first homes around 1841 and started exporting corn from their farmstead to Chicago via boat until an early canal system connected Galesburg with other nearby villages through Cahokia Township on the south side of Kankakee River and then westward through Edwardsville to Mundelein on Lake Michigan; shipping fees were collected by township officials from vessels docking at Cahokia Harbor during summer months.)
