Galesburg is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,752 at the 2010 census. Galesburg is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Kankakee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has been inhabited by the same people for more than 500 years. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Kane County were French and Indian traders from Quebec who traveled through this area in 1679 and 1680. In 1772, Lieutenant Colonel George Rogers Clark visited the area while on his way to view the Great Lakes. He called it "Galesburgh" after one of his family's ancestors, George Gale of Tiverton, Devon in England (1638-1712). In 1831, John Marshall founded a farmstead near today's downtown Galesburg on a bluff overlooking the Kankakee River. His son John A. Marshall then began farming there and developed what are now some of Galesburg's most important businesses: grocery store (1847), meatpacking house (1861), gas station (1914), lumber mill (1926), and college dormitory (1929). It was during this time that Galesburg became known as "the Athens of Illinois". In 1892 when villagehood was granted to Galesburg by Act No. 142 of the General Assembly of Illinois, Businessman James Wirtz donated land for erection of a public school district which would eventually become Cook County High School District #2A. This gift forever changed Galesburg as it became one of two villages located within Cook County proper – along with Glenview – providing education for all residents from earliest childhood until graduation from high school or beyond! During World War II many local businesses participated in production shortages resulting from wartime rationing; examples include White Castle Foods Incorporated (#1 producer) and Armour Production Company (#5 producer). In 1945 local teens started their own rock band called "The Byrds" which played at several small venues before becoming nationally popular starting out at Local Haus on Main Street! Galesburg is a city in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sangamon County. The name "Galesburg" comes from the Ojibwa word "gallia" meaning "place where many trees grow." The first settler in what is now Galesburg was Nicholas Southwick and his family who arrived on July 10, 1814. The city of Galesburg was founded on December 12, 1837 by John W. Gardner and others as a result of the land grant to him from General David Dixon. Gardner had purchased a tract of land east of present-day downtown Galesburg from John Butternut for $2,000 cash which he paid back with interest within two years. On November 2, 1839 the cornerstone for what would become Galesbergs First Methodist Church was laid by Mayor James Dickey and members of the town board. In 1870 Gideon Chamberlain donated land for what became East High School and it opened its doors on September 29th that year. In 1907 one million dollars were raised to build an addition to East High School which housed all new students including future Presidents Harry Truman and Franklin D. Roosevelt while also providing athletic facilities such as an auditorium and gymnasium across three floors underground. On October 1st 1907 when construction began on this project local residents got their first glimpse into what would become today's skyline when work started pouring ontoEast High School's roof! In 1965 Galesburghs water main ruptured causing extensive damage downstream including streetscapes along with 120 homes being destroyed along with other businesses rendering some 3,500 people homeless before reconstruction began five months later yielding some degree of hope for those impacted including community involvement committees formed by individuals within each neighborhood working together much like they are still doing today! On July 15th 1974 during summertime parts of downtown became uninhabitable due to high levels of Union Carbide Corporation's (UCC) effluent discharged illegally into Danube River contaminating both surface water sources used by millions upon millions daily without proper permits thereby allowing unrestricted release into environment over many years resulting in prior mentioned catastrophic consequences! This event remains one that has deeply effected everyday life in our once thriving community ever since!
