Dixon's goal was to open up trade with Native Americans living along the river valley and purchase goods they were selling to traders on the Upper Great Lakes. In 1840, General James K. Polk had purchased about 2 square miles (4 km²) of land east of town from John Saginaw for $10,000 after he became president of United States. On July 1, 1841, Polk designated Galesburg as his headquarters for operations against Mexican forces occupying Texas during its annexation by Mexico two years earlier. As part of his effort to control Mexican trade within American territory, Polk also developed Galesburg into an important commercial center due to its location at one end of a major trade route between Fort Worth and Veracruz City that passed through central Texas. Dixon arrived in Galesburg on March 14th, 1837 with eighteen men under command including future Ulysses S Grant who would later lead Union forces during World War I Under Dixon's leadership, Galsburgh rapidly grew into a thriving community with over 400 people living there by 1840 according to contemporary records In addition to its role as a commercial hub and territorial capital it also boasted an impressive collection of art objects including several pieces donated by prominent citizens such as George Washington Carver which are now exhibited at nearby Drake University The first public house built in Galsburgh was called The Tavern which operated until 1861 when it changed hands multiple times before finally being closed down for lack of patronage In 1850–51 local resident William Cranch donated land near present day First Avenue & North Main Street so that citizens could erect a schoolhouse which served as their government center until 1865 when Springfield Township took over that function By 1860 however, there were only seventy residents living in town while more than 4500 people lived within five miles (8 km) radius around it From this small but influential nucleus emerged what would become known as downtown Galsburgh or simply "The Village" although much larger developments began subsequently - such as residential areas northward along First Avenue from Main Street all the way unto Adams Boulevard - while still maintaining much rural character throughout most portions thereof . One result may have been increased fertility rates among early settlers due both to easy access to fertile farmland without having too farto travel or because some womenfolk resorted instead to manufacturing goods rather than engaging in traditional gender-based activities like hunting/fishing or yarn spinning prior thereto . This incidental suburbanization did not happen overnight however; quite gradually over time characteristic expressions such as terraced rooftops becoming dominant landscape features indicative of growing subdivisions clustering around villages began appearing .
