As one of twelve cities in the Quad Cities area with populations over 100 000 residents (the other eleven are Chicago ( Chicagos largest city), Omaha (Omahas secondlargest city), St Paul/St Louis (Minnesotas third largest city), Grand Rapids (Michigans fourth largest city), Lansing (Michigans fifth largest city), Springfield (Massachusetts)), Galesburg has played an important role in regional economic growth for many years now. According to Forbes Magazine's 2006 ranking of "America's Fastest growing small towns", Galesburg placed ninth out of sixteen major US cities with populations over 100 000 within commuting distance of each other – behind only Omaha (#2), St Petersburg/Clearwater (#3) and Riverside/San Bernardino (#4). The economic development story at Galesburg began with two brothers who were entrepreneurs; John Fitch and Dan Boone had started their own fur trading company from scratch back in 1818 near present day Champaign-Urbana Airport on the Sangamon River just north of downtown Urbana – where they built a log cabin which served as their business headquarters for several years before moving upriver to what would become what is now known as Galesburg proper on February 17th 1830 when both men received patents for 400 acres east side Sangamon River under Section 24(a)2(e) & 24(a)3(c) Of The act entitled “An Act For Regulating Commerce And Navigation On The Mississippi River” Allotted To His Evil Twin Brother Samuel Ford By Authority Of Senate Bill No 1111” This property included most all that would later comprise today’s Village square bounded by 3rd Street Eastwardly TO 4th Street Westwardly Along That Meridian….John Fitch erected A fence around This tract Which He named After Himself And Which Is Now Called Village Square…..In 1840 Englishman Mr James Muskerland Purchased Onehalf Interest In said patent From Our aforesaid partners For $540…This led To What We Now Know As Muskerdine wine Country french beer brand….It wasn’t until 1862 when Anthony Wayne purchased 5% interest from our aforesaid partners For $725 that we got our current name “Galesburg Brewing Company”….. accordingly An act was passed March 1st 1865 entitled “An Act Concerning Establishment Of A Post Office In These Towns Limits & Relating thereto” Which Said Post office Was Opened October 12th 1865 By Major General David Dixon….and Became operational November 6th 1865……Today there are Over 350 businesses located HERE IN VERSUS ONLY 180 LOCATIONS CLOSE TO THE CITY OF CHICAGO!!! As one might imagine given its location on top of a river surrounded by farmland dating back centuries since European exploration began hereabouts—Galeburgh quickly developed into one OF AmericaS MOST PROGRESSIVE COMMUNITIES! With contributions from its founders—namely John Fitch ($540 donation plus interest Received FROM OUR ANTERIOR PARTNERS))—girded together by determined citizens banding together during some very difficult times such as during the American Civil War; following Reconstruction; during World War II; beginning again following Watergate—-the village rapidly grew into an busy community full time residents numbering more than 4000 through 1860—-when it finally came down to earth following Prohibition….. GNATS CAUGHT FLYING thru THE ROAD UPON ENLARGEABLE FIRE ALL NIGHT AND INTO NEXT MORNING …..this resulted In Some Losses occuring immediatly All Meat Businesses stopped Due To Losing Sales Money……There WAS NO BUSINESS AS SIMPLE AS PORK BEFORE WEDNESDAY EVENING!!!!!!!!! Today there are OVER 350 businesses located HERE IN VERSUS ONLY 180 LOCATIONS CLOSE TO THE CITY OF CHICAGO!!! During this time period notables such as Judge Richard J Marshall who presided over Lower Town Hall Building–which still stands todaycomplete WITH ITS ORIGINAL DOORS LEFT OPEN FOR PUBLIC VIEWING TODAY…And Cyrus McCormick who invented Harvester combines Forward or Grain harvesters early used ON THIS continent WERE ALSO PRESIDING AT LAW OR OTHER PUBLIC OFFICIAL EVENTS IN THESEVillages………………….Today One can admire lovely old buildings LIKE Main Street Hall COMPLETE WITH ITS ORIGINAL STEELE AND DOOR BEHIND IT Contains Rare Original Paintings And Has Been UsedFOR RECREATIONAL ACTIVITY BY PLAYERS OF BALL GAME BACK THEN…………………All That Glitters Is Not Gold Anymore…..
