Galesburg, Illinois is a small town in Union County, Illinois, United States. The population was 681 at the 2010 census. Galesburg was founded in 1837 by Alexander Caldwell and his family. It became an incorporated village in 1920. Galesburg is located on the banks of the White River. It is one of seven townships in Union County and part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler to arrive in what is now Galesburg was Alexander Caldwell, who arrived with his family in 1837. He built a log cabin on the bank of the White River and named it Galesburg after his birthplace, Gansevoort (now Rotterdam). In 1840, he married Lydia Mehringer and they had six children: Anna (1841-1917), James Aiken (1843-1920), Caleb Hull (1845-1924), Lucretia Caldwell Dodge (1847-1925), Seward Fenton Beall (1849-1926) and Maria Beall Addison (1851-1927). In 1920, when Union County was formed from parts of Cook County,[1] Galesburg became an incorporated village within that county.[2] As an incorporated village, it held its own government with a mayor and five trustees; however, it did not have any public schools or services beyond those provided by its private schools which were operated by individual families. In 1974, when Union County merged with Kane County to form Illinois’ third largest county,[3] Galesburg again became an incorporated Village within Kane County. Since then, it has enjoyed continued growth as a residential suburb of Chicago with over 10 thousand residents living on over 100 acres near Lake Michigan/White River waterfronts across from McCormick Place Convention Center[4][5] and other large corporations like Sears & Roebuck[6][7], Chrysler[8], Ford Motor Company[9][10], Cummins Engine Co., Knoppers Ice Cream!, McDonald’s,[11] FedEx Ground [12][13], Nike,[14][15],[16]), Wrigley Field,[17] Rockford Music factory [18](see also below), as well as numerous museums like Art Institute of Chicago[19], University of Chicago Booth School of Business[20]; Winthrop University; Schaefer Farms Agricultural College; Crystal Springs Golf Course; two high school districts: Unincorporated Kane Township High School District #651 for students grades 9 through 12 and Kane Community Unit High School District 204 for students grades 7 through 8; three sports teams: boys soccer (.800 winning record since 2003); girls soccer (.500 winning record since 2006)[21]; golf team “Hawks”(No state championships since 2002)[22]; wrestling team “Bulldogs”(No state championships since 2006)[23]); music school “Stritch School Of Music” ; engine plant “Caldwell Machine Works” .

The town of Galesburg, Illinois was founded in 1819 by a group of farmers from the eastern half of what is now Indiana. The town grew quickly and soon became one of the most important towns in the area for its manufacturing capabilities as well as its location on the Wabash River. In 1837, Galesburg was named the capital of Illinois after statehood was granted to the state by Congress. The city's growth led to an increase in traffic and congestion on Longstreet Avenue, which at that time was one of the busiest streets in America. To alleviate these problems, engineers designed and built a bypass highway known as State Road 2 (now Interstate 65). This project helped reduce congestion and improve Galesburg's image. In 1957, Galesburg became home to Purdue University; this event has led to numerous changes and advancements for the town. Today, Purdue University is one of America's leading universities and plays a significant role in maintaining Galesburg's reputation for excellence. Additionally, Galesburg is also home to several other large businesses such as Kmart and Sears Roebuck; these businesses have contributed greatly to both local economic development and community pride.
The town of Galesburg, Illinois was founded in 1837 by John F. Gales and his family. The population of the town increased rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s, due to the land boom in the area. In 1846, Galesburg became a city.
