On December 7, 1830 – two weeks after John Cranch's death – Nathan Hale was fatally shot by John Adams inside Mount Rushmore National Monument northwest of Springfield. This event made Galesburg one oftwenty US localities included within Springfield Township when that township was organized on February 14th, 1839 under territorial laws establishing Sangamon County; it remained so until 1915 when it became part of Chicago Township. Civic life began to grow rapidly around this time with frequent hosting of social events by various leaders such as anti-slavery activists John Brown Sr., Elijah Muhammad and Abraham Lincoln. On July 4th 1840 residents erected a large granite marker reading: "Erected by citizens of Galesburg Aug.—1840" next to an early wagon road leading into town from Rock Island .
