The town grew rapidly due to its location and its proximity to transportation arteries such as the Chicago River and Route 13. In 1847, Galesburg became an incorporated village with a police department and fire department; it had a total population of 1499. That year, Galesburg became one of twelve towns in Cook County, Illinois to become under jurisdiction of what is now Lake County; it had a total population of 382 at the time. In 1932, when Cook County was merged into Illinois, Galesburg became part of Lake County again. During World War II, Galesburg played host to troops training for Operation Overlord at Camp Randall near present-day downtown; over 1 million men were trained there duringWWII alone. Afterward, many veterans relocated to Galesburg and other parts of southern Illinois while their families moved into new homes or continued living within walking distance of military installations throughout northwest Illinois (later Northwestern IL). When war ended in 1945, many veteran's families returned home but some residents remained behind while their properties were sold off or used as storage units until they could come back home again during peacetime. Today much evidence remains from WW II including ammunition depots converted into apartments and businesses next door to each other across streets now named after service members who once lived there: Camp Randall Avenue (now Camp Stripling Avenue), Camp Haggerty Boulevard (now camp Haggerty Road), Fort Knox Drive (now Douglas Street), Fort Knox Drive Extension (now Asheboro Road). Also still extant are several World War II-era Boeing Air Force Base Hangar buildings located on West Side Highway just south/west of Downtown Springfield; these structures were demolished following tornado damage in 1999-2000 that resulted from Hurricane Floyd
