It is located on the north bank of the Kankakee River in northwestern Illinois, just east of Chicago. The first settlers arrived in 1781 after being invited by Captain John Callahan to come and survey what would become present-day Kane County. The town was named for George Galloway, an early settler and captain who had been lost at sea and found his way to America on a raft landing near Galesburg in 1779. In 1809, when Congress created Kane County from parts of Cook and La Salle Counties, Galesburg became its county seat. In 1836 it was moved again to its current site due to flooding caused by the Sanitary & Ship Canal project; however, it remained as the county seat until 1970 when unincorporated Aurora took over that role. The city's rich history can be seen throughout its buildings and landmarks: The 400-acre (160 hectare) Haggerty Farm Museum is home to more than 20 historical artifacts dating back to 1800 including pioneer tools, clothing and items from everyday life; while downtown features several blocks of brick commercial buildings built between 1902-1904 which were nearly identical in design to today's buildings on Michigan Avenue downtown—the only difference being that they were built without permits or approvals from the City Council then as they are now. A number of other significant structures include: The old Galesburg Armory (now used as a museum), Old High School (now used as offices), Beechcroft Hotel/Casinos (now known as Regency Towers), First National Bank building (now known as One Commerce Plaza), Staley shoe factory (now known as Sam’s Club), Farmer’s Market building (today’s headquarters for United Way)), retail shopping district around Northwest Side Stadium which once housed Sears before being replaced by Marshall Field’s department store when that store closed in 1984; various smaller businesses such as AutoZone Center(later Sears Roebuck) across Northwest Side Boulevard from stadium; numerous restaurants including stars like Harry Potter's Diagon Alley restaurant inside stadium complex with views out onto Kankakee River; numerous small parks scattered throughout city center including Park Square Shopping Center adjacent to riverfront park along riverbank which also includes several large theaters within walking distance; while many larger office complexes have since been demolished or replaced by new construction but some older buildings such as American National Insurance Company Building still survive providing excellent examples of Prairie revival architecture characterized by wide eaves supported on low arches with projecting Ionic columns typical for this type of architecture during this period.; finally there is also an active community theater group called "The Stage" located adjacent to library on Northwest Side Boulevard which presents plays year round both produced locally through their own production program and workshopped with local theatre companies throughout Chicagoland area
