The city of Galesburg, Illinois was founded in 1829 by the Reverend John A. Fenton and his wife, Anna P. Fenton. The city's first settlers were Methodist missionaries from Kentucky who arrived in search of a new home for their religion. The town rapidly grew and became an agricultural center with a population of around 100 residents in 1830. By 1840, the town had reached 1,000 residents and consisted of a small business district around the courthouse, a few churches, and a schoolhouse. In 1847, Galesburg annexed the neighboring village of East Moline to its municipal boundaries. By 1860, Galesburg had reached 4,000 residents and boasted two banks (the First National Bank and the Citizens bank), three hotels (the Mechanics hotel and the American Hotel), four grocery stores (the Grocery store & Butcher shop; MerchantsGrocery Store; and Joice’s grocery store), six sawmills (one on each side of Main Street between First Avenue and State Street), seven printing works (six ink houses at Second Avenue east of Market Street; one at Third Avenue north of Market Street), five saloons (including two that served as post offices) as well as several other businesses including three lumber yards, four foundry shops (all specializing in cast iron products but also making plumbing fittings for homes) along with one hotel (& two boardinghouses). In 1875-76 Galesburg hosted what is now known as the Illinois Centennial Exposition which featured exhibits from all over Great America including textiles from England such as lace made by Mrs Adams & Co., toys made by Heiman Brothers & Co., tools from Germany by Meissner Bros., bicycles from Schwinn & Co., fireworks from Jordon Brothers Sons Incorporated etc etc etc etc...Galesburg was so successful that it decided to incorporation into a town hall style municipality on November 3rd 1880 having increased its population to 10,000 citizens although it still managed to maintain its rural character with almost all its businesses being centered around agriculture or providing services to farmers like plowing roads or carrying goods back&forth between farmssteads on horseback or wagons. On January 1st 1881 select people elected Mayor George Wickersham who served until he died in office on January 5th 1881 after serving 2 terms totaling 9 years...Two weeks later on January 17th1881 local dignitaries attended an auction where property within city limits was sold for $1 million cash! This event signaled not only the end but also beginning of rapid growth for Galesburg becoming one of America’s most thriving cities during this time period with many new buildings being constructed such as City Hall which stands today still looking very much like it did when first built in 1871 despite experiencing periodic fire damage over the years...In 1902 Galesburg voted to annex Plainfield allowing it total annexation covers up to mile long straight street called “Loop” running through both towns...Nowadays there are only scattered reminders remaining such as some old bricks left behind inside loop junction where once there were several blocks OF BUILDINGS
The town of Galesburg was founded by the Kinzie family in 1848. The first post office in Galesburg was established in 1850. In 1861, Galesburg became the seat of government for Kane County. The town was renamed to Galesburg after Illinois Governor James K. Polk in 1865. The population of Galesburg reached 25,000 by 1880 and 100,000 by 1920. In 1925, the city of Chicago annexed the town and it ceased to exist as a separate municipality.
