Galesburg, Illinois had a history of gunsmithing before the state’s admission to the Union in 1847. The first gunsmith in Galesburg was John A. Brown, who worked from 1837-1852. In 1853, George Haggerty opened his workshop on Main Street and quickly became known as one of Galesburg’s leading firearms dealers. His shop offered a wide variety of handguns and rifles, including many made by Smith & Wesson. In 1865, J.H. Crippen opened his store on Third Street and soon became one of Galesburg’s most important firearm retailers. He sold both pistols and rifles, as well as shotguns and muzzle loading guns. By the end of the 19th century, Galesburg had become an important center for firearms manufacturing in Illinois

Galesburg is a town in Macon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,895 at the 2010 census. Galesburg was founded on the banks of the Sangamon River by German immigrants in 1837. It became a commune in 1846 and a city in 1914. It is the county seat of Macon County. The Sangamon River forms much of Galesburg's eastern border and forms part of its municipal water supply. The river also provides drinking water for many businesses and homes in central Galesburg as well as for agricultural use west of the river to the east. The Sangamon River has been used for farming since before European settlement and during times when it was an important transportation artery linking local villages with other settlements to the south, east, and northwest. The first permanent settler in what would become Galesburg was George Koenig who arrived from Germany near Dresden about 1800. He built a log cabin on what is now Second Street about 1840-1841. Other early settlers were Johann Gottlieb Flügel (1814-1881), David Kapp (died 1883), Moses Klingenberg (baptized 1785?), Jacob Becker (died 1865?), Michael Hofer (1788-1849?), Wilhelm Weigel (1792-1860?), Peter Bauer(?-1800?) Caiaphas Spriggs(1765-[?] - d 1831) and others who came between 1830 and 1850 according to various sources including FBI history file # M470527 which lists ninety six names associated with this community
Galesburg was founded in 1836 by Adamson and his wife, Sarah. The city was named for the Gales River, which flows through it. The first post office in Galesburg was established in 1839. The town gradually grew due to its location on a trading route between Illinois and Missouri. In the early 19th century, Galesburg became an important center of flour production because of its many mills. By 1860, the population of Galesburg had increased to over 2,000 people. By 1870, the town had surpassed Chicago as the largest city in Illinois. In that year, Galesburg became a state capital and experienced rapid growth until 1890 when it lost its status as a provincial capital and declined thereafter.
