Freeport, Illinois is a city in the St. Clair County of Illinois, United States. The population was 24,253 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is one of the twelve most populous cities in Cook County. The DuPage River flows through Freeport and forms its eastern border. The first settler in what is now Freeport was Amos Root in 1815. The town was founded on August 12, 1838 by George Stephenson after he and his men built a steamboat from wood taken from a nearby swamp. The town name originated with General James Kossuth's visit to Freeport on September 5, 1838 while he was campaigning against Mexico City's president Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna at Bellefontaine Park on the north side of the river near present day Pilsen neighborhood on the south side of river. In 1847, Isaac Smith helped found Grayslake Township (now North Glenview), which extended into what are now parts of Berwyn and Skokie municipalities; Grayslake Township would become part of Willowbrook Township when it was organized as a village in 1902. In 1850, John Dickson laid out a plat for what became Freeport onto land that had been donated by Nicholas Brendel; this plat included an open-air millrace known as "The Well" because it brought water to farmers for their wagons travelling upriver to markets in downtown Chicago until about 1865 whenells closed operations due to high costs associated with building new dams upstream). In 1858—1859 Augustus Herrick laid out four blocks east of current day First Street between State Street and Jackson Boulevard; these were then called "Herrick Addition". On March 9, 1861—the same year that Abraham Lincoln lost his election as President—Hermann Acker laid out two more blocks eastward (this blockage remains today as First Avenue between Herrick Avenue and Jackson Boulevard) within what are now parts of Elmhurst and Cicero municipalities; these blocks were also called "Acker Addition". These Blocks 1-4 later became known collectively as "Freeport Heights", due to their location atop Lookout Hill overlooking downtownFreeport from an elevation above water level similar to those enjoyed by contemporaryfreelanders across Lake Michigan including Milwaukeeites who could see all along both sides of Lake Erie looking down upon their dockyards at North Wingfield Bluffs across Harbor Island just beyond Cook County property lines - thus providing not only excellent views but access (and potential investments) into waterfront areas adjacent to busy commercial neighborhoods - which then drew even more people looking for investment opportunities ashore or inland over time... On July 15, 1893—the date that Quaker Steamship Lines established its terminals here at Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Station--a group led by Captain Wm Copley purchased 8 acres adjoining present day Third Street between State Street and Jackson Boulevard from Asa Briggs for $5 per acre lot... this parcel became known as "Copley Field" after Captain Copley's son Henry Copley became involved with its development.. In 1895–96 quarried limestone from Eagle Rock quarry on Chicago's Northwest Side Was delivered direct to Freeport via barge beginning around mile marker 20 on modern US Highway 80 whereupon freeports first used railroad cars instead thereof directly loading/unloading ils off shore under cover of night during prohibition era making such traffic heavily regulated... In 1915 Edwin Epps developed an oil refinery adjacent to freeport which produced Jet A fuel until 1973... During World War II freeport prospered greatly thanks largely theretofore unrivaled fishing resources offshore plus local production by shipbuilders handling naval supplies arriving hereby during wartime ... nearly every kind imaginable seafood caught hereduring peacetime years up until recent years although some limits have been put back in place due to higher DEMAND than PRODUCTIONcurrently resulting primarily due To changing environmental conditions involving increasing levels nutrient runoff etc.... currentlyfreeport employs approximately 60% females compared unfreeports male employment rate currently hovering around 50%.

In 1995 Freeport merged with other nearby communities to form Streator County.
