Freeport, Illinois is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,887 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Freeport was David Horsfall in 1827. The town was founded on the site of what is now the Civic Center Park. In 1879, Mayor John Dromgoole created the City Council and established an office to market Freeport as a summer tourist destination for Americans living abroad. This promotion led to the growth of Freeport and its sister towns during the early 20th century: South Aurora and West Aurora northward from Freeport until they became their own municipalities in 1911; then northward again until annexation by Freeport in 1933. The post office at Freeport opened on July 1, 1879 (the date that Kane County was organized). In 1893, Frisco Rubber Co., which had been founded two years earlier by Ira Frisco and George Fenton as a manufacturer of rubber goods for farmers and other businesses around Chicago, moved its plant from Rockford to freestyle production at what would become called "Frisco Park." This new company attracted attention from American manufacturers who were looking for new sources of raw materials for their products. By 1907 Frisco Rubber Co.'s plants had produced over one million pounds (454 metric tons) of rubber annually using forced labor;[1] it closed down during World War I because of prohibition but reopened after Prohibition ended. Freeport's boosterism began to wane following World War II as production shifted back to Rockford due to increased demand within America postwar than outside it due to shortages caused by wartime bombing raids on Germany; this trend continued into the 1970s whenfreestyle production peaked and ceased entirely with the advent ofinished global trade opportunities attributable chiefly to stagflationary economic conditions throughout much of that decade-but has slowly resumed since then albeit with smaller output levels overall (+2% per year through 2016) while unemployment rates have remained high.[2] A major employer since World War II has been US Steel Corporation,[3][4][5] which built many large factories along IL Route 59 once freestyle production declined[6] including four main steel mills located within walking distance or less of most residents: Kensington Arsenal Military Factory (now known as Metropolis Tower), ArcelorMittal USA Plant (now Electro-Motive Industries), Alcoa Aluminum Worksplant (Now Huntsman aluminum) and Storlburg Paper Products Company facility adjacent thereto all now long defunct although some remnant buildings still standing such as Midvale Elementary School District Headquarters building across Kedzie Avenue from ArcelorMittal USA Plant).
