Freeport is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,849 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Freeport were French fur traders in 1679. The town was founded by George Washington and his group of soldiers when they arrived on their way from Fort Dearborn to trade with the French in 1791. The first white resident of Freeport was James Hickey who moved from what is now Ottawa, Ontario in 1793. Hickey set up a store and tavern near the mouth of the Kankakee River where today's downtown Freeport stands. In 1817, John Davenport established another store in Freeport which became one of the largest businesses in town until it closed its doors for good in 1903. In 1847, Commodore Daniel Beardmore built a wharf on the north side of Kankakee River opposite present-day First National Bank building and began trading with Native American tribes along the river while also building a fortification around his new business enterprise called Fort Bearden (later renamed Ft. Dearborn). At this time, Freeport was home to one hundred people and consisted mainly of small boats engaged in fishing, hunting and trading with local Native Americans who lived on or near the riverbanks. By 1850, Fr Emailton had grown sufficiently to support a full-time schoolteacher named Mrs Capps as well as five families living on Main Street which became known as "the Ghetto." In 1855 Fr Emailton's post office opened under mail service from Chicago; during this time mail deliveries were made twice daily fromfreeport's wharf across Kankakee River to Chicago instead of once weekly as then customary due to increasing congestion at that point on Lake Michigan caused by loads of goods being transported via water route only
