Freeport was founded in 1887 by the Freeport Shipbuilding Company, a subsidiary of the Imperial Chemical Company. The company built ships for the U.S. Navy and other commercial customers. In 1922, the Freeport Shipbuilding company merged with Bethlehem Steel to form Bethlehem-Heinemann Corporation. Bethlehem-Heinemann Corporation developed a steel industry in Freeport that became one of the largest in North America. The company produced locomotives, cars, bridges, turbines, shipbuilding products and other assorted goods and services until it ceased operations in 1986.
