By 1800 AD there were possibly as many as 20 villages within a radius of 100 miles (160 km) of Chicago occupied by various Algonquian-, Iroquoian-, and Native American groups such as the Potawatomi, Ojibwa/Otter Tail Hawk Clan, Winnebago/Illiniwekka Band of Potawatomi Indians, Fox Nation/Mishkeshawa Tribe/Natchez Purchase Community #1 (today’s Jackson County), Peoria Tribe #2 (near modern day Carbondale), Kickapoo Tribe #3 (near Rockford), Miami Band of Chippewa Indian Nation (#5 tribe today) along with some European settlers such as those who arrived with Captain James Cook on his third voyage in 1779–1780 aboard HMAS Discovery). The first Europeans who set foot upon this area were French settlers who built Fort Dearborn in 1795–97 following their successful expedition against Canada's Great Lakes region which included seizure of fur trade posts along the upper Chicago River corridor from Detroit through Milwaukee to Lake Michigan. After years of effort led by Colonel Christopher Carondelet – an experienced French fur trader and administrator under Napoleon I – Fort Dearborn was finally completed in 1807although not until direct orders from Emperor Napoleon himself! With George Washington Illinois Lieutenant General William Hull directing operations commander MajorGeneral Pierre Charles Laclau reported that: “the site appears most convenient for a post; its situation renders it untenable for any other purpose; its ebbings and flows bespeak perfect security; being situated so near both our lakes let us hope that no hostile intentions will designs upon either one or both” However only six months later while still under construction Fort Dearborn was captured by British forces during a joint U.S./British operation known as Black Hawk War which ended with Treaty of Green Bay ceding all land eastof la Grange Creek Including what are now Buffalo Grove Township south central Joliette County., except part Ottawa County located easton LaGrange Creek & weston Ottawa Creek
