Freeport is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 128,653 at the 2010 census. The city is the second most populous in Cook County after Chicago. It lies along the Fox River about 15 miles (24 km) north-northwest of Chicago and 40 miles (64 km) south of St. Louis on the banks of the Missouri River. The land that became Freeport was first developed as part of what is now DuPage County by John P. Morey and George Muhlenberg. In 1825, they founded what became the town of West Freeport on an area extending from present-day Wabash Avenue to current-day Erie Street and including much of what is now downtown Freeport. In 1827, Morey sold his interest in West Freeport to Amos Kendall for $5,000 cash plus ten thousand acres (20 ha) of surrounding upland country which he donated to freeman’s rights society for use as a township or village within this new government. As early as 1830, some small farming villages had been established around present-day West Freeport by employees of Kendall’s new company store and post office; these included East Freeport (now Elmhurst), Libertyville, Northfield Heights and South Holland Village (now Plainfield). On July 1, 1832 when DuPage County was organized into districts with individual county governments, West Freeport became part of District 9 under Fielding J. Freeport, Illinois is a small city located in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Sangamon County. The area that now Freeport became part of what is now Sangamon County on November 15, 1827 when a land grant was made to James K. Polk by President James K. Polk for his service as Secretary of War during the Mexican-American War. The town center was laid out in 1837 and named after Stephen A. Douglas, then a U.S Senator from Illinois and future Vice President of the United States who also served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations from 1861 to 1865 under Abraham Lincoln's first term as president before becoming an unsuccessful candidate for Ulysses S. Grant's nomination for Ulysses S. Grant's successor in 1868). The railroad arrived here in 1855 and soon Freeport became one of the most important industrial centers in Cook County; with riverboats loading goods into and unloaded goods from this port they were able to keep up with traffic until they closed down in 1968 when containerization started taking over transportation here due to advances in technology and cheaper shipping rates elsewhere around the world which caused prices paid by businesses here to increase tenfold while jobs dried up or went away entirely leaving Freeport without a single job since 1978! Today there are only a few truckers driving around town carrying essentials such as food, water & fuel supplies etc., but even these few residents bring some life back into this small downtown core that has been mostly abandoned for years! While many people know about Freeport’s rich history it would be difficult not include its current situation where virtually no one lives anymore except those who own property within walking distance or can take advantage of public transportation (which can get very full) making it very difficult for anyone to visit or do anything interesting here other than go shopping at Walmart!
