Freeport, Illinois (/ˈfɛrkət/; formerly spelled Freetown) is a city in Washington County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first white settlers in Freeport were David Wilcox and his family who arrived in 1814 from Maryland. They built a log cabin on the site of present-day Freeport High School where they lived for a few years before moving to what is now known as West Point Township. In 1819, the first store opened in Freeport when Isaac Aspinwall bought goods from local farmers and sold them through his own store. By 1840, there were five stores in Freeport with a population of around 100 people. In 1845, two brothers named John and George Hanna founded the town of Tomball on the east side of Chicago River near Wabash Avenue and South Throop Street. After purchase of land by the Hanna brothers from local farmers, Tomball became one ofFreeport's earliest towns with a population over 50 people. The town was dissolved by order of Ulysses S Grant on November 3,1846 after its citizens refused to give up their voting privileges to join Chicago due to fears that annexation would mean less government funding for their schools and churches which would be closed down if they did not comply. Afterward, most residents left Tomball for Freeport or other nearby cities while some continued to live there until it merged into Washington County on January 1st 1870 following an act by then-Governor Richard Molineux Sr.. On September 9th 1906 during World War Ifreeport was bombed by German bombers killing twenty three civilians including six children

By 1870, Freeport had become an important rail junction due to its location between Chicago and Rock Island Railroad lines.
