The mills produced an estimated 800 million pounds (340 metric tons) of steel each year and created over 1 000 jobs during their operation; they remain one offreeport's most important economic engines today. During World War II many workers from Freeport volunteered to serve in various military campaigns around Europe; some are still honored with Unit citations today including: USS "Plymouth" SSN 726 (CDR), USS "Hull" CV-17 (Ldr.), USS "Mackinaw" LSM-16 (Lt.), USS "Mc Donald" LCI(G) 948 (2Lt.), CSS "Virginia" LPD(T) 353 (5Lt.), HMCS("Vancouver") CG 6810 (1LT). North Side Machine Works closed its doors in 1957 but its legacy lives on with numerous businesses based within Freeport boundaries including American Maple syrup (now Saputo), Hinshaw & Jackson auto parts store and McLarty's Insurance Agency
