Franklin Park, Illinois is a community located in the far north central section of Chicago, Illinois. It is bordered by the city of Chicago to the east and north, and Cicero Township to the west. The park was named for Benjamin Franklin, who lived there during his lifetime. The first optical accessory store opened in Franklin Park in 1901. In 1907, a new Optical Research & Development Center was built in Franklin Park as part of a project led by Dr. Willis Wistar. This center developed innovative methods for researching light that are still used today. In 1916, Dr. Charles Sumner moved from Philadelphia to work at the Optical Research & Development Center before becoming its head scientist in 1921. He helped develop improved lenses and spectacles that are still popular today. In 1927, Dr. Edward Joffe founded Joffe Optics which continues to make high-quality optical products today!

The Franklin Park Optical Shop was opened in 1902 by Mr. and Mrs. John Wesley Hargrave, who also operated the First National Bank in Franklin Park. The shop was a one-room operation located on the northwest corner of Lombard Street and Springfield Avenue. It was later moved to its current location on West Addison Street in 1916. Over the years, the shop has been involved in many important optical advancements including becoming the first business to offer grinding services for lenses, Developing a new type of lens called an "invisible surface lens," and providing eyeglasses and sunglasses to customers. In 1978, the store became part of Sears Holdings Corporation when that company merged with Roark & Company Incorporated. In 2002, Sears Holdings Corporation sold its assets to Kmart Holding Company LLC for $2 billion.
