Franklin Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,692 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was named for General James K. Polk, who served as president from 1845 to 1849 and as governor of Illinois from 1850 to 1855. The first settlers in Franklin Park were Irish immigrants who arrived in the early 1800s. In 1865, General James A. Garfield was fatally shot by John Wilkes Booth while he stood on a platform at Ford’s Theatre in Lincoln Center in New York City; Booth had called himself “General Grant” and wanted to appear as if he were Garfield's assailant. The assassination deeply affected America and led to increased attention paid to crime and public safety in cities across the country. In response to these changes, Congress passed an act authorizing the creation of a bureau of police known as the National Police Department (NPD). This agency would become one of America’s most successful counterterrorism efforts during World War II; it has been cited as one of the reasons why Franklin Park achieved such high levels of development throughout its history despite occasional crime rates that remain high today."

Franklin Park lies on the Northwest Side of the city and includes much of the Rogers Woods area. The first European to visit what is now Franklin Park was Captain James Cook in 1795. He note that "a fair piece of ground lying near by, probably containing some remains of those who built their stockade there a few years ago", may be worth exploring for trade purposes. In 1824, John Stephenson surveys and writes about a proposed road through what is now Franklin Park as part of his work on the Erie Canal project; he recommended that it run south from Michigan Avenue east to Lake Shore Drive near Navy Pier before turning north and running along lakefront to reach DuPage River. However, this plan never materialized because Congress declined to appropriate money for it until after Stephenson's death in 1829. In 1835, surveyor George Washington Smith marked out lots for sale in what is now Franklin Park on land which he owned west of Armour Road (now Wabash Avenue). The lots were priced at $1 per acre ($30 km²) and sold within months to people who planned to develop them into farmsteads or villages with churches, schools, bathhouses and stores among other amenities. It wasn't until 1839 when Richard Mapplethorpe sketched out his concept for Chicago's new centerpiece – an open space bounded by Randolph Street on one side and Milwaukee Avenue on the other – that planners realized they had located something special. In 1840–1841 Abraham Lincoln visited Illinois while making his way back from Mexico City; while there he inspected various sections of Chicago including Franklin Park where he stopped at a pond where he saw a man swimming with two children under an old tree nearby. After talking with the father about America's upcoming Civil War (Lincoln would later become an abolitionist), Lincoln returned home without taking any pictures but left behind a memorandum asking someone named Thomas Edison if he could build him an electric lightbulb so that "one good public exhibition" could be put on display during his visit; Edison responded yes within weeks and construction began soon afterwards (the first electric light bulb was installed in Columbus Circle in New York City just three years earlier). This event helped spur forward development downtown which included buildings such as Loyola University's main building(built between 1886–89), The Tribune Building (1892), McCormick Place (1896), State Street Bridge (1902) and Union Station(1914). By 1870 almost all residential areas had been replaced by factories or market districts such as Rogerswoods West/South Side or Hillside/Lakeview areas around Soldier Field which became known collectively as "The Loop". Development continued apace into World War II when American military forces moved into newly annexed territory such as western Cook County including parts of Franklin Park which served as prisoner-of-war camps during the war period like Oak Lawn / Skokie Hills etc.. Even today large portions of Franklinspark are still largely unused due to its location sandwiched between two major Chicagoland cities however many small businesses have started up recently throughout much of park providing valuable services within walking distance from most neighborhoods
