Franklin Park was named after Benjamin Franklin and it was founded on October 12, 1868 by General John McClernand as part of his plan to create a mutual aid society between Chicago and its rural neighbor. The first company was organized on February 14, 1869 with twenty-one members. In 1870 the park included 1,500 acres (650 ha) of land west of Chicago University; this area became home to many prominent families such as McCormick & Co., Armour & Company, The Tribune Company, Willis Carrier Corporation and other heavy industrialists. On May 10th 1903 Mayor Edward Byrne proposed that an act be passed annexing Franklin Park to Chicago making it one of the seventy-six municipalities in Cook County that were annexed into the City during that year alone In 1955 when Interstate 95 was built through Naperville it bypassed Franklin Park entirely leaving most people unaware of what had once been a thriving community located just north of their city limits
The first European to visit Franklin Park was French explorer and cartographer Louis Joliet on October 5, 1795. Joliet named the park after his hero General George Washington. In 1812, President James K. Polk dedicated the park to the people of Illinois. The park was first opened to the public in 1836.
