Franklin Park is a census-designated place in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first gun security history in Franklin Park occurred on November 6th, 1864 when five men were shot at by unknown assailants while they were hunting game near the then unincorporated community of Bellefontaine. Three of these shooters are still living and reside in Franklin Park today: Johnnie Ray Ramsey (born 1923), Al Capone (1911-1993) and Leo Castaldi (1920-2009). This shooting inspired the creation of the Illinois State Police Department on December 1st, 1864 in order to "provide necessary law enforcement for all citizens". This event also helped create the current police department's jurisdiction over all of Deerfield Township which now includes much of Franklin Park. Franklin Park is a large city in the U.S. state of Illinois, and the county seat of Kane County. The population was 95,816 as of the 2010 census[1] and 128,653 as of 2015 estimate. It is one of the most populous cities in Illinois. Franklin Park is founded on April 12, 1836 by Benjamin Franklin with land that he donated to the city in exchange for services rendered during its early years.[2][3] The original site included only about 1/4 acre (0.20 km²) of what now makes up Franklin Park. In 1837, developer John Kinzie collected $10 from residents who had pulled down a fence around their gardens to make way for his new town square near where Union Avenue and State Street intersected Koster Road (now North Side Drive).[4] In 1847, Chicagoans built a gristmill on Cook River east of present-day Green Bay due to an oversupply of flour caused by high demand in California following the Mexican–American War.[5][6][7] The mill attracted settlers including Bishop James Ladd and others who donated land for churches and other public buildings,[8] some still standing today such as Stroud Methodist Church which was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966[9][10], as well as homescholarship organizations like Ladies Home Journal who rented space from Reverend Jesse Jackson at nearby Madison Square Garden until 1963 when they moved into their current building at 5th and State streets.[11] In 1868, Chicagoans laid out plans for Franklin Park after watching citizens walk through then-new Forest Preserve lands west of Armour Boulevard along Lake Michigan waterfronts bordering Milwaukee County (now part of suburban Milwaukee). When Arsenal Heights were annexed by the city in 1871,[12][13]:252–254 it became part of what are now Polk Plaza areas within Franklin Park; but development continued apace eastward along Kimball Avenue into Jefferson Parish—the future Orleans Parish—until 1895 when Cook County acquired all but two blocks south (northwest corner) of Kimball Avenue between Wabash Avenue and I-635Hyde Tollway for use as a farm colony known thereafter as Frankfort Hills; much later still portions extending northwest beyond I-635 Highway were annexed to Champaign Township (Champaign County)[14]:281–284 while area lying north past I-635 was annexed to Urbana Township (Urbana County).[15]:314
The Franklin Park area was once part of the village of Highwood. The first settler in the area, John Haggerty, arrived in 1837. A mill was built on the current site of the park in 1845 by Wm. and Sallie Haggerty. The mill became a dry goods store and eventually an amusement park. In 1903, the high school was built and soon afterwards, a public library opened within the park as well. In 1938, Franklin Park became a city park and has since been home to various events including summer concerts and football games.

At first it was named "Swingate", but when the name "Franklin" was chosen for the new town it became official. In 1916, during World War I, Franklin Park became one of 144 American communities that took part in the Battle of Stonington because its residents had gathered food for their local military forces and were also able to provide munitions necessary for war effort. In 1951, following ratification of the US Constitution by Illinois voters, Mayor Harry Sink designated Franklin Park as an incorporated municipality with its own government and laws separate from those of Cook County. On November 1st 1913 Samuel Colt's Manufacturing Company opened its first gun factory in what is now known as Colt Firearms Manufacturing LLC located at 801 N Milwaukee Avenue in what is now known as downtown FranklinPark IL On July 16th 1912 while sitting at home eating ice cream1 Samuel Colt killed 6 men with his revolver using only three shots each
