In 1911, the Town of Franklin Park passed an ordinance that prohibited handguns from being carried without a license. This ordinance was later repealed by the state government and all handgun carrying licenses were now required to be issued through the State Police Department. At this time, gun lights were still used as a warning signal for those who did not have proper identification or authorization to carry firearms. The first gun light system in Franklin Park was installed in 1933 by Mr. Jens Jensen, owner of Jensen’s Gun Shop on Third Street near Bellefontaine Avenue. This system consisted of two green acetylene torches connected to metal hangers which could be raised and lowered along with a switch located on top of the torch control unit. The use of these gunsights allowed farmers and other local citizens to walk their dogs at night without fear that they might get lost or become victim to robber or kidnappers carrying knives or pistols with them).
