He is credited with being the first person in the area to use a polishing cloth and brush on firearms to remove tarnish and dirt. In 1865, A.F. Young opened what is now known as Young's Gun Shop located on the west side of Franklin Park. This business was responsible for importing many new models of firearms into the area from Europe, and they also supplied testing facilities for new guns. The shop continued operations until 1971 when it was closed due to financial difficulties. During its time, Young's Gun Shop was one of the most important sources of firearm information in Franklin Park because it possessed many rare Firearms including pistols by George Washington, James Bowie and other noted American shooters. Throughout its years of operation, Young's Gun Shop has been managed by several individuals who have made an impact on the community in which they lived and worked; these include Gene Greenough (1962-1978), Dick Hite (1980-1989) and Donny Jones (1990-1999).
