Franklin Park is a census-designated place in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,141 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European to see Franklin Park was Colonel James K. Polk in 1836 when he explored the area for a proposed route for the Illinois Central Railroad. The park was named after General George Washington's home state of Virginia and has been known as such since 1853 when it opened to the public as part of what is now known as Prospect Park on the northwest side of Chicago. In 1864, Congress created Forest Preserve No. 1 around Franklin Park and this forest contains much of present day Kane County including parts of Franklin Park itself. In 1924, most of Ridgeley Woods east of Loop 12 (now called Pulaski Road) were annexed into Franklin Park; this annexation removed most if not all residences from what is now current Mount Greenwood Shopping Center and also includes a portion of Roosevelt Drive which forms an eastern boundary with Mount Greenwood north thereof before turning south again near where I-290 crosses over Loop 12/Pulaski Rd./Ridgeley Dr.: these areas remain unincorporated today but are included within Franklinspark according to their ZIP code designation 62434: during World War II many homes in Ridgeley Woods were used by USAAF Air Force pilots training at nearby Hennepin AFB: they vacated their homes after the war and all but two structures still survive today (the last being #407 on Pulaski Road).
