Franklin Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 38,521 at the 2010 census. It is the third-largest city in Chicago and home to the University of Chicago and many other high-profile institutions. The first European settlers in what is now Franklin Park were Frenchmen who arrived in 1763. They named their new land Pointe du Lac after a point on the Lake Michigan shoreline where they saw vessels stranded. In 1803, when Illinois became a state, Partridge Island was transferred from Winnetka Township to Franklin Park as part of that state's largest realignment of local government. The first buildings in Franklin Park were log cabins built by fur traders during the early 1800s. The town grew rapidly due to its location near railroads and industry; it began receiving electric lighting and streetcars in 1892. By 1907, however, growth had stalled as businesses moved away from downtown for suburban areas with more amenities such as parks and libraries. The last streetcar ran on October 15, 1907; by then, much of Franklin Park had been demolished for development into apartment complexes and shopping malls that continue to thrive today. In 1946–47 several months of emergency action were required as a result of an insect infestation affecting millions of trees throughout Chicago which caused extensive damage both within and outside the city limits; Franklin Park was one of few communities unaffected by this outbreak (the rest being located in Bronzeville). In 1964 construction began on what would become OneChicago – one of the world's most ambitious urban redevelopment projects ever undertaken – resulting in hundreds of jobs being created along with dramatic changes to neighborhoods across Chicago including increased density around Parkside Drive eastward towards State Street/Wicker park (now Midtown) while south central remained largely unchanged despite becoming increasingly gentrified into upscale neighbourhoods like Lawndale etcetera over time leading some residents to refer to OneChicago as "One White City". Phase two commenced following completion of OneChicago dubbed "Creative Loafing" which saw public programming (such as art shows and music festivals) taking place inside many old industrial buildings vacated forUrban renewal purposes only later revealed to be riddled with lead & asbestos problems making them unsafe for human occupancy& finally uncovering evidence that top management knew all about these issues well before they were made public

The park was created in 1892 as part of the Franklin Park Project, which was designed to improve life on the Near West Side by creating open space, providing new public benches, and connecting different neighborhoods.
