Frankfort, Illinois is a town in Stephenson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,812 at the 2010 census. Frankfort is located on the Vermilion River and within the Springfield metropolitan area. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Joliet Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded by German immigrants in 1839 and named for Friedrich Wilhelm Freiherr von Frankfort-Kuessel (1797-1868), Baron von Kuessel who had led an abortive uprising against British rule in Germany in 1848. The first post office was established in 1841. The first store opened in 1850. In 1860, a railroad station was built and the town began to grow rapidly; by 1870 it had over 100 residents. A public school was established in 1865 and it continues to be open today. In 1896, a new courthouse replaced an earlier one that had been destroyed by fire. The courthouse became home to both local courts (the Genesee Circuit Court which included Stephenson County until 1905) as well as federal court proceedings from 1951 until its closure in 1998 due to financial problems; also, from 1976 through 1978 it served as home to Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum before that institution moved into larger facilities near downtown Chicago. The city of Frankfort annexed parts of neighboring townships during the late 1800s when those towns were experiencing rapid growth: Vernon Township (1901), Morris Township (1902), Davenport Township (1903). As these annexations occurred, many businesses closed or changed locations due to competition from new developments elsewhere within Stevenson County or Cook County outside of Frankfort itself – this often resulted in smaller communities losing out on economic development opportunities while larger ones gained an advantage because they could offer more expensive land or infrastructure investments relative to their predecessors. “Frankfort experienced rapid growth beginning around 1860 but slower expansions took place after 1906 when annexation happened across neighboring townships” according to historian Katherine Hubbard Bradley writing about “Illinois's Immigrant Towns” programsupported by the Illinois State Historical Society which aimed “to promote historical research on behalf of state government entities through collected data”

Frankfort, Illinois is a city located in the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 21,214 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Cook County after Chicago and the largest city in Kane County by area. Frankfort is home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, one of America's largest universities and one of its flagship campuses. Other large employers include Ford Motor Company, Sears Holdings Corporation, and Monsanto Co., which all have plants in or near downtown Frankfort. The first permanent settler in what is now Frankfort was Levi Coffin on October 8, 1818 when he claimed land east of present-day First Street and north of State Street as part of a grant from President James K. Polk to Caleb Pickering. In 1825 John Purdy settled on some land adjoining coffin's grant; this became known as Purdyville and later developed into downtown Frankfort where both Purdy's store and post office were located until destroyed by fire on May 12, 1907 (the date remains etched on the wall near where City Hall now stands). In 1827 George Stephenson built his first steamboat dock at what is now Lockport Harbor for loading riverboats with limestone from quarries along the Mississippian River just west of town limits; this dock became an important transportation hub for goods transported downriver to Quincy and other towns along the lower Mississippi River system during the early 1800s. A few years later Stephenson donated land adjacent to his dock for a public school district that would serve northern Illinois; this district is also responsible for providing elementary education throughgrade 6th through12th grades today. In 1830 Abraham Lincoln served asFrankfort's Mayor while he attended law school at DePauw University; during his time as Mayor Lincoln organized a Volunteer Militia regiment called "The Indiana Battalion" which served two months against Native Americans known locally as The Illini or Red Men because they wore red clothing (this event still occurs annually during Lincoln Day weekend). When Lincoln returnedfrom service he again took up law practice but soon abandoned it due to political differences with General Andrew Johnson who had taken over controlof Ulysses S Grant's army during Reconstruction following reconstruction’s end in 1865 - these disagreements led to open warfare between Johnson’s forces and Grant’s troops beginning on April 14, 1871 when Johnson sent Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee into town seeking refuge from Union troops occupying Springfield – the Battle Of Franklin resulting in over 140 deaths (one third of whom were civilians) including many famous people such as Daniel Webster who lost an arm at that battle before becoming a Ulysses S Grant aide-de-camp general after being wounded numerous times throughout his career including leading Ulysses S Grant’s military campaigns against Sherman & Johnston In 1870–71 Congress passed legislation authorizing construction of a new systemuleadwestward from Springfield onto Indian Territory comprising partsnowin Kankakee Countyandnorthern Calhoun CountyincludingFrankfortanditsvariouslypopulatedadjacentvillagesandtownshipsincludingLockportHawkeyeLakeLansingMosesFultonNilesOwenThompson
