During World War II Frankfort was home to 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment (3ACR), which fought at Omaha Beach and other key sites across France; 7th Armored Cavalry Regiment also fought there during World War II but their unit disbanded after the war ended without combat experience. In 1945–46 Frankfort hosted over 75% of all immigration applications to America from Europe through Operation Paperclip. Nowadays, much attention is paid to economic development due to its location within Chicagoland region; many high-tech companies have been established since 2000 including Googleplex and Microsoft Park.
