After several days' combat Soward withdrew his brigade and abandoned Cairo rather than continue into open warfare against superior numbers being offered by Major General Andrew Jackson for inclusion in his army invading Tennessee that winter under Major General Winfield Scott’s command….After extensive surveys made by him he recommended that this site be chosen for a permanent seat for the government of St Landry Parish…. In pursuance thereof I authorized Governor Claiborne to purchase from Mr Fenton & Company Lot No 6 on Monday Evening November 30th 1816…the town then existing within its limits was named for me – Frankfort [sic]
