The population was 485 at the 2010 census. Frankfort is located on Chicago's River North and has been a center for commerce and industry since its incorporation as a town in 1868. The first post office in Frankfort was established in 1867, and it served as the village's only character until 1915 when it became part of the larger city of Chicago. In that year, Mayor John Altgeld designated Frankfort as its own municipally-owned borough with authority to levy its own taxes within limits set by his office. Since then, annexation by Chicago has regularly occurred; however, most annexations have taken place through special legislation passed by both houses of Congress which authorizes such annexation under certain circumstances (e.g., when two or more municipalities share a common postal address). In recent years there have been proposals for annexation by other nearby cities (including Wauconda and Oak Lawn), but no action has yet been taken due to strong opposition from Mayor Altgeld's office - one reason being that he fears that any relaxation of zoning regulations would lead to even more businesses moving into Frankfort and less competition among local businesses for tax dollars. In spite of its small size, Frankfort has made significant contributions to American culture both before and after World War II including serving as home to important cultural institutions such as Northwestern University (founded in 1892) and DePaul University (founded in 1903). The community also played an important role during Prohibition by conducting sales operations support for temperance efforts while also providing nightlife opportunities for residents who could not drink alcohol legally. Today, many nightclubs dot downtown Franksburg despite prohibition having ended nearly seventy years ago - evidence that business activity remains robust despite challenges posed by crime rates, gentrification trends, increasing pollution levels & development pressures exerted from outside sources..
