Frankfort is a small town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Frankfort was John Fenton. A post office called Frankfort was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1837, a group of settlers led by Arthur Green built a log cabin on the south side of the river. The community name derived from "Frankfort", an old English settlement near Manchester that had been abandoned when its inhabitants converted to Christianity. In 1847, Isaac Meek founded what would become Meeker County and named his county seat at Frankfort. Throughout the 19th century, several other towns were consolidated into Frankfort – Prairie du Chien (1851), Decatur (1864), Rockford (1868), Lockport (1872), and Elmira (1901). In 1903, the city of Chicago annexed all but one of the towns within McHenry County; Frankfort thus became part of the new city's boundaries. The population reached 3,500 by 1910 and 4,000 by 1920; however, during World War I and World War II Franksburg's population dropped precipitously due to heavy military activity and then rapid growth following incorporation into Chicago as a suburb of greater Chicagoland; however it has since grown again throughout recent years with annexations from Will counties including Downers Grove/Beloit/Waukegan/Evanston etc., most recently Lombard in 2018
