Rail transportation played a major role throughout most of downtown Frankfort’s history until it was replaced by buses and cars during World War II when railroad tracks became unavailable because of wartime construction projects statewide. In 1965, Drury State Hospital opened its doors as one of only two hospitals providing care for patients with mental illness within a 50-mile radius; it would remain open until 1996 when it merged with University Hospital Chicago to form one large hospital campus across Loop Drive from downtown Chicago. In 2002, Franklin County established a tourism bureau which operates several hotels & restaurants within town limits as well as visitor centers & exhibits about local history inside and outside city limits; those facilities are still open today despite being used mostly for functions such as weddings & other tourism-related events rather than patient care over many years).
