It began as a small town on the banks of the Wabash River, and soon became an important center for trade and commerce on the Great Lakes region. The first settlers in what is now Frankfort were men from New England who founded a trading post in 1795. In 1824, General John Brown's raid on Fort Dearborn led to the Battle of Frankfort which ended with British forces retreating into Canada without taking any prisoners or supplies. In 1836, when Congress created Michigan Territory, Franksfort became part of that new territory along with other communities such as Detroit and Lansingburgh. In 1861, after Abraham Lincoln was elected president and took office as Ulysses S Grant's second term began, Franksfort became an important military outpost during the American Civil War because it was near Chicago and could import food essential to Union troops fighting in that war. After Lincoln's death in 1865, control of control over southern Illinois passed to Confederate General Robert E Lee; however, this did not mean that Franksport fell out of favor with President Johnson due to its strategic location near Chicago; rather it continued to be an important supply depot for both sides until 1973 when it merged into Cook County government as part of a larger restructuring process within county government across Illinois . As one result of these changes, many jobs lost during the early 1990s recession but have since recovered including those at local companies such as DHL Ground Service Company (now FedEx) which moved their HQ from Joliet to Frankfort following deregulation in 1995; KFC also moved their corporate headquarters from Peoria to Frankfort after being purchased by Yum! Brands Incorporated (later Taco Bell) following deregulation later that year
