In 2006, Northwoods voted to secede from FoxLake and become its own independent municipality with its own government and taxation system. In 2009, FoxLake placed second behind Bloomingdale Township for Most Improved Village Award from the Illinois Municipal League (IML). The IML's report card awarded villages that have made dramatic strides since 2007 to improve their communities' quality of life through innovative programs such as public safetyitizen engagement or community development block grants which give assistance to non-profit organizations working to improve public amenities within their village boundaries

The first store in Fox Lake was built in 1840 by David Chappell. A ferry service crossed Fox River to get goods to and from Chicago until 1915. The first school in Fox Lake was built on the north side of the river in 1846 by Elias Howe and others. It stood for thirty-seven years before being replaced by a new school building that still stands today on Main Street. The first football team played at Pembroke Park (now known as Recreation Center) between 1892 and 1896; they were led by Captain Dan Goodrich. In 1916, fox hunting became an official sport in Illinois; Fox Lake became one of its initial locations. In 1924, Harry Heinsen started operating his ice cream parlor at 5th Street and State Avenue in what is now known as Heinsen's Ice Cream Parlor Museum; it remains one of only two remaining examples of an early commercial structure infox lake dating back to that time period.
