Fox Lake is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. Fox Lake is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Fox Lake were French traders in 1764. The town was named after John Fox, an early settler and captain of the company that traded with French settlers on the Great Lakes. In 1814, following the Treaty of Ghent, Fox Lake became part of what was known as the Northwest Territory which included most of Illinois and Northwestern Wisconsin. The territory was organized into counties by 1832 and then into municipalities by 1847. By 1860, all but two of those municipalities had been replaced by townships when Illinois became a state; Fox Lake remained an unincorporated township until it became a town in 1865. The first post office at Fox Lake was established in 1836; it continued operation until it closed in 1907. The present post office building was built in 1909 and is located on Main Street near its original location across from the old courthouse where court sessions were held for many years before moving to new quarters downtown during prohibition times when alcohol could be bought only from convenience stores statewide! One interesting feature about village life during this time period (and still occurs today) was that all residents paid property tax on their homes regardless of whether they lived within walking distance or not! This system allowed for village unity even though there were wide variations among individual residences as to size and type (single-story wood frame dwellings vs brick row houses). In 1870–71 a water main line connecting Racine with Chicago reached Brownsville just north of present dayFox Lake; however, no facilities were developed along this road because transportation options at that time were very limited due to lack of both money and land availability! A later extension westward connected Brownsville with Chicago via Racine’s northern border allowing easy access to larger cities such as Chicago while keeping farmers closer to their markets! In 1902 two large dams were built along Fish Creek – one near present day White Hall (on upstream side) and another about one mile downstream from current day Rockslide Resort which formed much of today’s Village Park neighborhood—both projects resulted in major changes for water usage within villages/townships/cities along these various waterways! These large-scale dam projects ultimately led to increased agricultural production around these areas which contributed significantly to local economic development over time

They were led by Daniel Drake, who donated 1 acre (0.4 hectares) for a church and graveyard on his farmstead near present-day Fox Lake Village. At that time, the land that makes up present-day FoxLake Village was part of Racine County. In 1839, John Fenton purchased 2 acres (0.8 hectares) from Daniel Drake for $100USD$. He named it Fenton Grove because he thought it would be good land to grow crops on given its location close to water resources and other villages in the area. Fenton Grove soon became home to several businesses including a mill and sawmill operated by Ebenezer Smith and others during the 1830s and 1840s; however, these businesses did not survive into modern times due to competition from better-funded rivals such as those started by George Stephenson two decades later when he built railways through much of northwestern Indiana Territory
Fox Lake was founded in 1818 by George Fox. The community grew quickly due to the land's many lakes, ponds, and streams. In 1846, the first post office was established in Fox Lake. By 1870, the population of Fox Lake had reached 2,500 people.
