Fox Lake is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. In 1871, Samuel Colt invented and marketed the first revolver in America. Fox Lake was one of several communities located along the western shore of Lake Michigan to be developed as gun factories during the early 20th century. The revolver industry declined after World War I, but new innovations in ammunition and shooting techniques revived it in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Gunmakers turned to centerfire firearms for profits during Prohibition-era America. Production peaked around 1945 with more than 2 million revolvers produced annually; however, by then handguns had largely replaced rifles asAmerica's primary hunting weapon. Gunmakers returned to production during both World Wars II and thereafter; however, NRA regulation of firearms led to a decline in production starting in the late 1960s. In 1903, members of the club met to discuss how best to protect themselves against rifle shot pellets that may enter into their property through window openings. They voted unanimously to buy a rifle shot proof system (RSPS) from George Eastman Company and began using it at their shoot on April 15th, 1903. Fox Lake is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,564 at the 2010 census. The town is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Fox Lake is one of the oldest settlements on the current Fox River Valley. It was founded by French trappers in 1795 and named for General Jean-Baptiste La Salle's victory at the Battle of Cartagena over Spanish forces in 1796. The first post office in Fox Lake opened in 1825 and was called "Sault Ste Marie". The name change to "Fox Lake" after a settler from Minnesota named John Fenton moved to what is now Fox River Township in 1855. In 1857, two brothers, George and Samuel Fenton, opened a grocery store at present day North Avenue and Wabash Street. They were followed by their father and brother-in-law, Niles Hickey, who operated a general store until his death in 1903. In 1912, Milton Herschell became an owner of the Chicago White Sox baseball team which had played its first game as part of the new American League (AL). He changed their name to the Sox because he felt that it reflected his hometown's history: "Chicago wasn't just my city; it was my home." As part of his ownership effort he also began buying land around Fox Lake for development into farmland that would be used for baseball stadiums such as Wrigley Field and Comiskey Park during his time as owner/manager/daylight hours worker with the Sox from 1912 to 1956 (the last year they played under their original name). The town's population reached 3,000 when Interstate 95 entered into service along village boundaries on November 1st 1994 following construction through much of Cook County from scratch across six years starting in 1991 concurrent with new township formation; this project included grading roads and building bridges over several streams including Fox River valleyizing most alluvial deposits resulting in dramatic changes approximately 10 miles long by 6 miles wide within minutes east/west extending through every populated locality adjacent thereto resulting finally totaling more than 6000 residences intersecting I-94 & linking via expressways providing all kind types transportation services thereby creating or enhancing quality life opportunities thruout many communities scattered thruout Cook County
